MU Naval ROTC History Preserved
Over the summer of 2017 after their May commissioning, three of our young Naval Officer alumni worked closely with the MU Special Collections & University Archives staff at the Raynor Memorial Libraries to make a high resolution digital scan of every Porthole yearbook that the NROTC Unit held, 57 in all, dating from the first year of the unit’s forming in 1940. Depicted above, left to right are: Katie Blank (Electronic Records Manager); ENS Bryan Troup; ENS Brooks Furleigh; ENS Daniel Peters; Amy Cooper Cary (Head, Special Collections & University Archives). The result of over two years of coordination by your Alumni & Friends Assn (A&FA), this was a superb team effort by these individuals with the support of CAPT Dan Olson, our previous CO at MU NROTC.
Due to concerns with loss, the NROTC Unit placed the Portholes into the university archive for retention. This will ensure that this incomparable record will be maintained for the future. With their digitization, they can be more accessible to our alumni with no risk to the originals. A&FA is working on a plan to host as many of these Porthole digital copies as we can on our evolving website / Wild Apricot membership management system – stay tuned for developments. We are also continuing to work with the Archives staff to develop a long term plan to eventually have the Porthole yearbooks hosted on the university’s digital collection website (http://www.marquette.edu/library/archives/). As you might guess, this all comes down to funding and priority.
So, real progress – but we need your help. Many Porthole yearbooks are missing from the collection. Can you alumni donate (or loan?) your Porthole to round out the collection? We want to ensure the archives has a complete record – and we will work with the unit to scan the additions when we have “stashed” Ensigns available. If you can help complete the collection, contact Mike Good at email@example.com. Here are the 18 needed Porthole editions:
1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1986, 1995, 1999,
2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012
Midshipman 1/C Brandy Kinnunen was awarded a Navy officer’s sword April 27, 2018 during the Marquette NROTC Spring Ball at the Milwaukee Intercontinental Hotel. The award, from the Marquette NROTC Seapower Leadership Association (SLA), is presented to the Top Navy Unrestricted Line graduate. The award was presented by Lt. Colonel Albert Lagore, USMC (Ret), MU NROTC Class of 1990 and SLA president. Upon commissioning in May, Midshipman Kinnunen will report for duty to the USS Ross, DDG 71, as a Surface Warfare Officer.

2018 ALUMNI AWARD NOMINATIONS PERIOD:
1 APRIL THROUGH 1 AUGUST 2018
Dear Marquette University NROTC Alumni and Friends,
Please help your Association Board by nominating deserving alumni candidates for our 2018 Alumnus and Young Alumnus Awards, to be presented at the 2018 Annual Fall Ball. We strongly encourage you to consider the records of fellow alumni and nominate candidates you feel are worthy of special recognition.
Many distinguished alumni have served our country valiantly and honorably during the past 78 years, both in peacetime, and during every conflict from World War II through Korea, Vietnam, two Gulf Wars and Afghanistan, and many skirmishes in between. We have honored thirteen of our distinguished alumni since 1990, from a Marine Corps First Lieutenant to a Navy Vice Admiral. We know other alumni officers are deserving of this honor. We need your help in bringing them to our attention. Alumni are our primary source of nominations.
Please make plans to join us during the Annual Fall Ball. Meanwhile, please use the following Award Guidelines and Nomination Form to put forward the name(s) and documentation of worthy Marquette NROTC Alumni Award candidates. That includes the re-nomination of candidates who were not selected in previous years, who remain eligible for these honors if their names are resubmitted.
Help us make our 78th anniversary celebration outstanding and memorable. The nomination submission deadline is 1 August, 2018.
Martin Menez, Captain, USN (Ret.)
